Reconstructing braies
After a lot of thought based on pictures, and several attempts developed from the basic principles of "large shorts" it appears that the answer to the correct interpretation of braies relies on the use of larger quantities of material than I was initially willing to accept.
As a result, the following pattern - produced after much research and not shown to scale here - seems to work really well. It is also the least complicated shape that was developed. (There's probably a moral in this!)
