De Montfort deployed his smaller army into four divisions:
All divisions probably organised themselves with a front rank of cavalry and trailing ranks of infantry, strengthened by the inclusion of unmounted highly trained serjeants and knights. In the case of the Londoners in de Montfort's third division, these infantry were particularly poor.
The ground where the two sides met is saddle-shaped: that is, each flank could not see across the field to their other flank, so the king was limited in his view of the action. De Montfort, on higher ground and probably in the middle of his fourth division, would have commanded a much wider and more useful view.
